Charulata' is the story of a woman's desires and love. Charu was married at a very young age to a man twice her age. As she grows up her she has desires but her husband Bhupati who is busy with his work fails to satiate her. Bhupati gives shelter to his brother-in-law Umpada and his wife Manda in his house so that Charu gets a companion. The arrival of Bhupati's college going cousin Amol changes Charu's life. She starts fulfilling his demands and whims. Both of them spend time together and get close. Charu encourages Amol's writing talent. But, Charu gets jealous when Amol publishes his writing and becomes famous. Charu believed that Amol and his writing belonged solely to her. She starts writing in order to teach Amol a lesson and earns fame. The distance between Charu and Amol increases. Amol befriends Manda. Finally Amol marries and goes away leaving Charu heartbroken. Bhupati tries to spend time with Charu and win her heart but in vain. Bhupati realizes Charu loves only Amol and so he leaves her and goes away on the pretext of work.
